Product description

Dive into the vibrant world of classic jazz with Bob Wilber's "Groovin' at the Grünewald," a timeless collection of swing and ragtime gems recorded live at the Grünewald Room in the Stockholm Concert Hall on May 4, 1978. This album, released on September 1, 1978, under the Phontastic label, captures the essence of a live performance with an intimate and energetic atmosphere.

Bob Wilber, a legendary clarinetist and saxophonist, is joined by the talented Dave McKenna on piano and Pug Horton on bass, creating a dynamic trio that breathes new life into both classic standards and lesser-known treasures. The album features a mix of well-known tunes like "Someone to Watch over Me" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light," alongside lesser-heard but equally enchanting pieces such as "The End of a Beautiful Friendship" and "Lotus Blossom."

With a runtime of 41 minutes, "Groovin' at the Grünewald" is a delightful journey through the golden age of jazz, showcasing Wilber's mastery of his instruments and his deep understanding of the genre's rich history. The album's remastered version, released in 2022, ensures that the music sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did over four decades ago. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Bob Wilber

Bob Wilber was a renowned American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and bandleader, celebrated for his dedication to classic jazz styles and his ability to present traditional pieces in a contemporary manner. Born in New York City in 1928, Wilber's musical journey began in a household steeped in melody, leading him to become a formidable figure in the jazz world. Throughout his career, he collaborated with legendary jazz leaders such as Bobby Hackett, Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet, Jack Teagarden, and Eddie Condon. Wilber's influence extended beyond performance; he was an original member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band in the late 1960s and co-founded Soprano Summit in the early '70s, a band that gained significant attention. His contributions to jazz were vast, encompassing roles as a composer, arranger, and educator. Wilber's passion for traditional jazz, particularly the style of Sidney Bechet, made him a bulwark against the bop revolution, ensuring the preservation and evolution of classic jazz for future generations. His legacy continues to inspire, making him a beloved figure in the world of swing music and ragtime.
