Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical piano concertos with Wilhelm Backhaus, a renowned name in the world of classical music. This album, released on June 19, 2020, under Warner Classics, presents a captivating collection of works by two of the most celebrated composers in history: Edvard Grieg and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Backhaus masterfully interprets Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16, a piece known for its lyrical beauty and nationalistic themes. The concerto is divided into three movements, each showcasing Grieg's unique ability to blend Norwegian folk music with classical structures. Backhaus's performance is marked by its technical precision and emotional depth, making this concerto a standout piece on the album.

The second half of the album features Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23. This concerto is one of the most popular in the classical repertoire, and Backhaus's rendition is nothing short of spectacular. The three movements of this concerto are filled with dramatic contrasts, from the majestic opening of the first movement to the lively and energetic finale. Backhaus's playing is characterized by its clarity, expressiveness, and virtuosity, making this concerto a true highlight of the album.

With a total duration of 56 minutes, this album is a perfect blend of Grieg's romanticism and Tchaikovsky's dramatic intensity. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Wilhelm Backhaus's interpretations of these timeless concertos are sure to captivate and inspire.

About Wilhelm Backhaus

Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) was a German pianist and pedagogue renowned for his profound interpretations of the core classical and romantic repertoire, with a particular affinity for Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms. Born in Leipzig, Backhaus began his musical journey at an astonishingly young age, giving his first concert at just eight years old. His career spanned an impressive six decades, during which he became celebrated for his technical virtuosity, musical clarity, and unwavering dedication to the composer's intentions. Backhaus was also a pioneering recording artist, with a discography that includes the complete Chopin Études and all 32 Beethoven Sonatas, the latter being the first complete recording of the cycle. His extensive recordings offer a unique opportunity to trace the evolution of his style over six decades, from his early, fiery performances to his later, more contemplative interpretations. Beyond his solo work, Backhaus was also highly regarded as a chamber musician, further cementing his legacy as one of the most significant pianists of the 20th century.
