Released on Back on Black, this 40-minute powerhouse features nine tracks of relentless energy and technical prowess. From the opening riffs of "What is the Last Time?" to the final notes of "Focus," Forbidden delivers a sonic assault that showcases their signature blend of aggressive riffs, thunderous drums, and soaring vocals. "Green" is a testament to Forbidden's ability to craft intricate, fast-paced metal that remains accessible and engaging. This is a sturdy, impactful print with great loudness and hardly any surface disturbance on my version. I gauged it at DR10.

  • Forbidden's Unique Thrash Experiment

    4 out of 5 stars

Similar to DISTORTION, Forbidden ventures beyond thrash for something… more peculiarOriginally dropped in 1997, GREEN was the fourth of five studio albums by Hayward, California’s Forbidden (which sits just south of Oakland in the Bay area). The band delivers technical thrash metal crafted by guitarist Craig Locicero and have been on hiatus since 2012. My top pick from their discography is undoubtedly their final album, 2010’s OMEGA WAVE. That record blended the late 80’s technical thrash of their first two albums — FORBIDDEN EVIL (1988) and TWISTED INTO FORM (1990) — with the unique artistic style of their two mid-90’s releases — DISTORTION (1994) and GREEN (1997) in an exceptional way. That leads us to GREEN. With the rise of grunge in the early 90s following the success of Nirvana’s NEVERMIND, Craig & the gang felt liberated to ditch the thrash metal formula and truly explore their artistry. Don’t misunderstand, there’s still a thrash aspect, but it’s less predictable. Like its older sibling, DISTORTION, every element of the band is more polished on GREEN, but something about the songwriting keeps the tracks from truly gripping the listener. Consequently, you can enjoy the entire album, but leave without recalling any specific song. However, this is remedied by repeated listens: The more you hear, the more it stands out. My standout tracks are the eerie doom of the opener “What is the Last Time”; the experimentation of “Turns to Rage,” which includes spoken word during the verses and features a peculiar post-chorus segment; the heavy grunge metal of “Blank,” which kicks off psychedelically; and the quirky, yet catchy finale. For those craving speed, there’s a punk/thrash/speed trio (tracks 6-8). The album was just too profound, too unique, in the mid-90s for the average rock-metal enthusiast who apparently preferred “a mosquito, my libido.”GRADE: B+/A-

About Forbidden

Forbidden, a powerhouse in the metal scene, blends thrash, speed, and groove metal to create an electrifying sonic experience. Known for their intense rhythms and raw energy, Forbidden has carved out a niche for themselves in the metal genre. Their music is not just about powerful guitar riffs and pounding drums; it's a journey through the darker, more aggressive side of metal. Fans of high-octane, fast-paced metal will find Forbidden's discography a treasure trove of adrenaline-pumping tracks. Beyond their music, Forbidden's influence extends into the gaming world, with their artistry featured in the 2024 video game Strinova, specifically the weapon skin "Rebelflame - Ming."
