Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Felix Mendelssohn with this captivating album, a celebration of his timeless compositions. Released on August 31, 2015, under the Andante Media HÖRARCHIV label, this collection spans a variety of genres including chamber music, classical, classical piano, and choral, offering a rich and diverse listening experience.

The album opens with Mendelssohn's iconic "A Midsummer Night's Dream, Incidental Music, Op. 61," featuring the beloved "Wedding March," a piece that has become a staple at weddings worldwide. This suite, written to accompany Shakespeare's play, is a testament to Mendelssohn's ability to evoke the magical and the whimsical.

Following this, the album presents the "Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, MWV N16 'Italian'," a work that showcases Mendelssohn's mastery of orchestral composition. The symphony's four movements, from the lively "Allegro vivace" to the energetic "Saltarello. Presto," transport listeners to the vibrant landscapes of Italy.

The "Songs Without Words, Book 5, Op. 62" offers a moment of introspection with the hauntingly beautiful "Venetianisches Gondellied. Andante con moto 'Venetian Gondola Song'." This piano piece, with its evocative melody, is a perfect example of Mendelssohn's ability to convey emotion and atmosphere through music.

The album also includes the virtuosic "Rondo capriccioso, Op. 14, MWV U67" and the "Piano Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 25, MWV O7," demonstrating Mendelssohn's prowess in both solo and concerto forms. These pieces, with their intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms, highlight the composer's technical skill and artistic vision.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 2 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Mendelssohn's musical genius. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this collection offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn, born into a wealthy banking family in Hamburg in 1809, was a prodigious talent whose influence on the Romantic period is immeasurable. A child prodigy, Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting, poetry, athletics, and linguistics. His compositions, which include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, are renowned for their optimism and life-enhancing qualities, earning him the title of one of the 'Sunshine Composers.'

Mendelssohn's repertoire is vast and varied, with standout works including the enchanting overture and incidental music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the evocative "Italian" and "Scottish" Symphonies, and the beloved oratorios "St. Paul" and "Elijah." His "Songs Without Words" for solo piano are particularly celebrated, offering a glimpse into his deep emotional range. Beyond his compositions, Mendelssohn was also an accomplished artist, capturing scenes from his travels through England and Scotland in sketches.

Despite his untimely death at the age of 38 in 1847, Mendelssohn's legacy endures, celebrated for his contributions to classical music and his enduring influence on the Romantic era. His music continues to inspire and uplift, a testament to his enduring genius.
