About Eugene Goossens

Sir Eugene Aynsley Goossens, a prominent English conductor and composer of the 20th century, left an indelible mark on the classical music world. Born in London in 1893, Goossens began his musical journey at a young age, eventually becoming a renowned violinist before transitioning to conducting. He served as the first permanent conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1923 to 1931, showcasing his exceptional talent and leadership.

Goossens' compositions, often overshadowed by his conducting career, are notable works that stand alongside those of his contemporaries like Bax, Bridge, and Walton. His most celebrated pieces include the Oboe Concerto from 1927, two symphonies from 1940 and 1945, and two operas. These works reflect his deep musical insight and innovative spirit, making them essential listening for any classical music enthusiast.
