About Giovanni Francesco Anerio

Giovanni Francesco Anerio, a pioneering Italian composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras, was a key figure in the Roman School. Born around 1567 in Rome, he began his musical journey as a choirboy under the renowned Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina at St. Peter's Basilica. Anerio's innovative spirit led him to be among the first Italian composers to experiment with the eighth note and its subdivisions, marking a significant evolution in musical notation. His diverse and extensive body of work includes sacred motets and a notable requiem, showcasing his versatility and mastery. As the younger brother of fellow composer Felice Anerio, Giovanni Francesco's compositions stand out for their creativity and distinctiveness.
