Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Edward German's "Tom Jones," a comic opera that brings to life the timeless tale of Henry Fielding's 1749 novel, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling." Released in 2009 by Naxos, this operetta is a delightful blend of wit, grace, and period detail, showcasing German's lyrical prowess and melodic genius.

Comprising three acts and an additional selection of songs, "Tom Jones" spans nearly two hours of captivating music. The opera unfolds with a vibrant introduction on the lawn at Squire Western's, setting the stage for a series of charming songs and ensembles that follow Tom Jones and his companions through a series of adventures and romantic entanglements. From the lively "The Barley Mow" sextet to the tender "Love maketh the heart a garden fair," each piece is crafted with nuanced attention to character and story.

The opera culminates in a joyous finale, "Hark, the merry marriage bells!" celebrating the union of Tom and Sophia. The additional songs, including "A Foundling Boy" and "By night and day," further enrich the narrative, offering a deeper glimpse into the characters' emotions and motivations.

Edward German, known for his contributions to the operetta genre, composed "Tom Jones" in 1907 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Henry Fielding's birth. The opera's success is a testament to German's ability to capture the spirit of Fielding's novel, translating its humor, romance, and drama into a musical format that remains engaging and entertaining over a century later.

With its rich orchestration and memorable melodies, "Tom Jones" is a must-listen for fans of operetta and classic British comedy. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a delightful and immersive experience that showcases the best of Edward German's musical talent.

About Edward German

Sir Edward German, born German Edward Jones on February 17, 1862, in Whitchurch, Shropshire, was a celebrated English composer and musician of Welsh descent. Knighted in 1928 for his significant contributions to music, German is best remembered as the successor to the legendary Sir Arthur Sullivan in the realm of English operetta. His prolific career spanned a wide range of works, but he is particularly renowned for his extensive incidental music for the stage and his charming light operas. Among his most notable compositions are "The Emerald Isle" (1901), "Merrie England" (1902), and "Tom Jones" (1907). German's music, characterized by its wit, melody, and charm, captivated audiences during the early 20th century, making him one of the most popular composers of his time. He passed away on November 11, 1936, in London, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to enchant listeners today.
