Product description

Roberto Gerhard's "The Plague - Epithalamion" is a profound and immersive orchestral work that blends spoken word, chorus, and instrumental music to create a hauntingly beautiful exploration of Albert Camus' novel "The Plague." Released in 1996 under the Naïve Classique label, this album is a testament to Gerhard's unique compositional style, which seamlessly integrates various musical elements to convey a powerful narrative.

The album is divided into nine parts, each titled "The Plague: No. X," followed by a French subtitle that corresponds to a significant event in Camus' novel. These sections are interspersed with "Epithalamion," a choral piece that provides a contrasting, more hopeful perspective. The narrative unfolds through the evocative spoken words of Michael Lonsdale, the BBC Symphony Chorus, and the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, all conducted by Edmon Colomer. The combination of these elements results in a rich, textured soundscape that brings Camus' story to life in a new and captivating way.

"The Plague - Epithalamion" is not just a musical adaptation of a literary classic; it is a standalone work of art that stands on its own merits. Gerhard's compositional prowess is evident in the way he weaves together the various components of the album, creating a cohesive and engaging listening experience. The album's duration of one hour and eight minutes allows for a deep dive into the story, with each track building upon the previous one to create a sense of progression and resolution.

This album is a must-listen for fans of orchestral music, choral works, and those who appreciate innovative approaches to storytelling. Roberto Gerhard's "The Plague - Epithalamion" is a remarkable achievement that showcases the power of music to convey complex narratives and evoke deep emotions.

About Roberto Gerhard

Roberto Gerhard, born in 1896 in Valls, Spain, was a composer whose musical journey spanned two nations and a wealth of influences. With Germanic parents, Gerhard's early musical training in his native Catalonia was marked by studies with the renowned pianist Enrique Granados and the esteemed composer Felipe Pedrell, who ignited his passion for Catalan folk music. His compositional style was further shaped by his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, reflecting a blend of Catalan tradition and modernist innovation. Gerhard's exile from Spain led him to a prolific career in Britain, where he composed for theater, radio, and film, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to captivate audiences today. His works, such as the Violin Concerto, showcase his unique voice and enduring appeal. Gerhard passed away in Cambridge in 1970, leaving behind a body of work that stands as a testament to his artistic vision and cultural heritage.
