Product description

"Friday" by Musica Elettronica Viva is a captivating journey into the world of free jazz and avant-garde music, recorded in London in 1969. This seminal album, originally released under the same name, is a testament to the groundbreaking work of the collective, which was formed in Rome in 1966 by Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum, and Frederic Rzewski. The album features two extended tracks, "Friday (Part One)" and "Friday (Part Two)," that showcase the group's innovative approach to live acoustic and electronic improvisation.

With a duration of 40 minutes, "Friday" offers a deep dive into the experimental and improvisational styles that Musica Elettronica Viva is renowned for. The album's raw and unfiltered sound captures the essence of the group's live performances, making it a unique and dynamic listening experience. The music here is an extremely experimental form of electronic jazz, which, while not strictly adhering to any one style, draws comparisons to the early works of German electronic music pioneers.

This reissue, released on 22 November 2011 by 1201 MUSIC, brings the historic recordings to a new generation of listeners. Whether you're a seasoned fan of avant-garde jazz or a curious newcomer, "Friday" offers a compelling exploration of the boundaries of music and sound. The album's enduring influence and innovative spirit make it a vital addition to any music collection.

This LP was released in 1969.

How do we keep reviews authentic?

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

I'm puzzled as to why folks call the original vinyl "Friday" - "Friday" is the title of the track, not the album's name.

About Musica Elettronica Viva

Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV) is a pioneering force in live acoustic and electronic improvisational music, born in the vibrant streets of Rome in 1966. Founded by a collective of innovative spirits including Allan Bryant, Alvin Curran, Jon Phetteplace, Carol Plantamura, Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum, and Ivan Vandor, MEV has always been an irregular institution, reuniting intermittently over the years with an ever-shifting lineup that has included the likes of Steve Lacy, Garrett List, and George E. Lewis. MEV's music is a wild, open exploration, incorporating found sounds and urban environments as instruments, creating suites that are as imaginative as they are imaginary. From their early experiments in the late 60s to their influential performances and recordings, Musica Elettronica Viva continues to push the boundaries of what music can be, making them a legendary name in the realms of free jazz, avant-garde, and experimental sound.
