Product description

Black Country, New Road's sophomore album, 'For the first time', is a masterful blend of art rock, chamber pop, post-punk, and post-rock, showcasing the band's eclectic and innovative approach to music. Released on 5 February 2021 via the esteemed Ninja Tune label, this 40-minute sonic journey is a testament to the band's skill in crafting intricate, genre-bending soundscapes.

From the opening notes of 'Instrumental' to the closing strains of 'Opus', the album takes the listener on a winding path through a diverse range of textures and moods. Tracks like 'Athens' and 'France' demonstrate the band's ability to balance delicate, atmospheric moments with more driving, post-punk influenced sections. Meanwhile, songs like 'Science Fair' and 'Sunglasses' showcase the band's penchant for crafting infectious, off-kilter hooks.

Throughout 'For the first time', Black Country, New Road's unique blend of styles and influences is on full display, resulting in an album that is both cohesive and unpredictable. With its complex arrangements, introspective lyrics, and soaring instrumentation, this album is a must-listen for fans of experimental and avant-garde music.

This is a 2025 Reissue Repress released as a LP.

  • Timeless Post-Punk Jazz Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    feqjiwyeaxepbrDecember 30, 2025United States🇺🇸

A phenomenal first album. Combining post-punk and jazz, it's shaping up to be a timeless masterpiece.

  • Surface Noise Issue

    3 out of 5 stars
    qotqakletDecember 20, 2025United States🇺🇸

As the other review pointed out, there's a fair bit of surface noise on the right channel of this pressing. I picked up on it on both sides.

  • Disappointing B Side Quality

    4 out of 5 stars
    IgdiryubwaapDecember 13, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This album has been my top pick for the year up until now, but this particular copy is a bit of a letdown. The A Side isn't too bad, just a couple of tiny pops here and there, nothing too serious. However, the B Side is another story with a lot of whooshing surface noise that seems to get worse as it goes along. It's mostly in the right channel, while the left channel has its fair share of pops too. Towards the end of Opus, both speakers are crackling back and forth, which can really ruin the quieter parts. A bit of a shame about the pressing, but the songs still hold up even with the changes since their initial release.

  • Inconsistent Stereo Playback

    3 out of 5 stars
    ncoadx970November 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

My copy's pretty quiet, just a couple of pops here and there, barely enough to mention. The real headache, though, is how this record can't make up its mind about which channel to use. It flips between mono and stereo like it's playing a game, and it's especially bad on the second half of side B. Not ideal for an LP that's supposed to have a wide soundstage, but hey, you win some, you lose some. At least it looks nice in my collection, I guess...

  • Background Noise, Great Record

    4 out of 5 stars
    tfjcaqiNovember 21, 2025United States🇺🇸

There's a bit of background noise in this record, especially on Track X, but it doesn't bother me much. Apart from that, the record sounds fantastic.
