This album by Mau5 seems to be his most underrated work, even though it includes some well-known tracks like "Ghosts n' Stuff", "Strobe", and "Moar Ghosts n' Stuff". However, it also contains some lesser-known tracks that I believe are true hidden gems. Songs like "Bot" and "Soma" are incredibly catchy Tech House tunes. "Word Problems" almost feels like a nod to "Sometimes Things Get, Whatever" from 'Random Album Title'. "Lack of a Better Name" is also quite enjoyable. "The 16th Hour" gave me a nostalgic rush when I first heard it, reminding me of the solid Prog-House tracks from, once again, 'Random Album Title'. "FML" and "Hi Friend!" also have something uniquely catchy about them. "Hi Friend!" has those uplifting, almost hyper lyrics that make you want to at least tap your foot, and "FML" is pretty driving and fitting to kick off the CD. So, whether you love the album or not, I usually recommend this one and 'R.A.T' to younger Mau5 fans.
The production quality is solid, but it's quite pop-oriented. Shows Deadmau5's shift from somewhat respectable tunes to average electro house tracks.
The audio quality is phenomenal. I'm truly glad I chose this. It's the first album that introduced me to the EDM music scene!
UPDATE: Gave it one more shot when 4x4 dropped -- picked 'em up in-store this time instead of online. Just as I figured, both records were grimy and one sleeve's got a nasty crease -- BUT! -- no scratches, miraculously. (A few light scuffs here and there, but they don't mess with the sound). After a SpinClean spin, they were gleaming and ready to go. And MAN, THEY SOUND AMAZING!!! Analog synths just shine on vinyl, and with deadmau5 being all about that, these releases kick ass. Everything's crisp and punchy, just like you'd expect, but now with that deep, natural vinyl sound. Super happy with 'em now, just wish the quality control was on point.---First copy -- both discs were filthy and scratched to hell, Disc 1 especially; a nasty scratch ruined the first half of Bot.Replacement copy -- both discs were filthy and scratched, Disc 1 again; two nasty scratches mess up Word Problems in two different spots.I ordered these straight from the mau5hop. Didn't even bother asking for a third replacement. Just went for a refund, which they finally processed today. Quality control's a joke, honestly. What a bummer. Sounds FANTASTIC though -- killer mastering. Goddammit. Not holding my breath for 4x4=12...
It looks like Side C was combed over with someone's hair, leaving bits of press on it. Gross! There's way too many pops and clicks for my liking and the inners are cheap, but I've put them in extra sleeves. The audio quality is great though, so after a good clean these will be alright.
