Product description

Emanuel Feuermann, a name that resonates with cello enthusiasts, brings us a captivating live performance with "Feuermann in Concert." Released in 2005 by Cello Classics, this album is a testament to Feuermann's virtuosity and his deep connection with the cello. The album spans a variety of genres within classical music, showcasing Feuermann's versatility and mastery.

The tracklist is a blend of well-known pieces and hidden gems. It begins with a series of arrangements by Pau Casals and Alexander Siloti of Bach's "Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564," offering a unique perspective on this classical piece. The album also features "Papillon" by Felix Mendelssohn and "Après un rêve" by Gabriel Fauré, both arranged for cello and piano by Pau Casals. These pieces are a delightful addition, showcasing Feuermann's ability to bring out the melodic beauty and expressive depth of the cello.

The centerpiece of the album is Camille Saint-Saëns' "Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 33, R. 193," performed live. Feuermann's interpretation is a tour de force, with each movement—"Allegro non troppo," "Allegretto con moto," and "Molto allegro"—demonstrating his technical prowess and emotional resonance. The album concludes with the lively "Bourrées I & II" from Bach's "Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009," performed live, leaving the audience with a sense of joy and satisfaction.

With a duration of just under 38 minutes, "Feuermann in Concert" is a concise yet powerful collection that highlights Emanuel Feuermann's exceptional talent. The album is a must-listen for anyone interested in classical music and the cello, offering a glimpse into the world of one of the most celebrated cellists of the 20th century.

About Emanuel Feuermann

Emanuel Feuermann, born in 1902 in Kolomea, now part of Ukraine, was a virtuoso cellist whose brief yet impactful career left an indelible mark on the world of chamber music. Born into a musical family, Feuermann began his musical journey under the guidance of his father, who played both the cello and violin. By his early teens, Feuermann had already gained recognition for his extraordinary talent, performing publicly and even composing his own works. His technical prowess and innovative approach to the cello revolutionized the instrument's playing style, earning him comparisons to the legendary violinist Henryk Wieniawski. Despite his tragically short life, ending at the age of 39, Feuermann's recordings and legacy continue to inspire and captivate audiences, showcasing his unparalleled skill and artistic vision.
