Product description

Experience the enchanting voice of Fritz Wunderlich in "Festive Arias," a captivating collection of sacred and festive arias that showcase his remarkable vocal prowess. Released in 2016, this album is a testament to Wunderlich's enduring legacy in the world of classical music, featuring a diverse range of compositions that span the Baroque era.

The album opens with selections from Johann Sebastian Bach's beloved "Weihnachts-Oratorium" (Christmas Oratorio), offering a taste of the holiday spirit with Wunderlich's tender and expressive recitatives and arias. The program continues with excerpts from George Frideric Handel's "Messiah," sung in German, providing a unique perspective on this iconic oratorio. Wunderlich's interpretation of these well-known works is both intimate and powerful, highlighting his ability to convey deep emotion and musicality.

In addition to Bach and Handel, "Festive Arias" features works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Heinrich Schütz, and Georg Philipp Telemann. These lesser-known compositions offer a delightful contrast to the more familiar pieces, demonstrating Wunderlich's versatility as a singer and his commitment to exploring the full breadth of the Baroque repertoire. The album is accompanied by the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, conducted by August Langenbeck, providing a rich and vibrant musical backdrop for Wunderlich's performances.

With a duration of just over an hour, "Festive Arias" is an ideal introduction to the world of Baroque sacred music and a wonderful addition to any classical music lover's collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Fritz Wunderlich or discovering his voice for the first time, this album is sure to captivate and inspire. The album was released by SWR Classic and features 23 tracks that beautifully blend the festive and sacred themes that Wunderlich was renowned for.

About Fritz Wunderlich

Fritz Wunderlich, born Friedrich Karl Otto Wunderlich, was a German lyric tenor celebrated for his exquisite interpretations of Mozart's operas and a wide array of lieder. With a voice characterized by its beautiful tone, effortless production, and elegant phrasing, Wunderlich captivated audiences across the tenor range, delivering both tender melodies and thrilling vigor when the moment called for it. Born into a musical family in Kusel, Germany, in 1930, Wunderlich's talent blossomed under the guidance of his conductor father. His repertoire spanned the works of Strauss, Schubert, and Bach, among others, earning him a reputation as one of the finest Mozartean tenors of his time. Tragically, Wunderlich's promising career was cut short when he died in a fall down a stone staircase at the age of 35, just days before his 36th birthday. Despite his untimely death, his recordings continue to enchant opera enthusiasts worldwide, showcasing his remarkable artistry and enduring legacy.
