  • Everlast's Soulful Revelation

    4 out of 5 stars
    gevxsu_hbOctober 28, 2025Deutschland🇩🇪

Everlast's second solo album, following his time with House of Pain, is a true revelation. While his debut "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues" already caught attention, this second album takes it to another level with its soulful exploration. The cello accompaniment in "Whitey" was a bit unsettling, but "Black Jesus" is utterly captivating, blending the soul of James Brown with the vibe of O.C. Smith—simply brilliant. "I Can't Move" continues the energy of "Ends," but here, violins sneak into the background. "Black Coffee" feels like Joe Cocker dipping into soul, while Carlos Santana's contribution on "Babylon Feeling" grows on you, though "Put Your Lights On" doesn't quite hit the mark. Unfortunately, "Deadly Assassins" falls flat, feeling too much like Cypress Hill. However, Rahzel's Human Beat Box in "Children's Story" brings back the swing and soul that Everlast excels at. The slow, beautiful tracks "Love for Real" and "One and the Same" follow, while the deep-voiced "We're All Gonna Die" packs a punch. "Mercy on My Soul" delivers a Western-Soul vibe, and "One, Two" is a dry but soulful Hip-Hop piece. The classically underscored "Graves to Dig" is another standout. If only all soul music could be this compelling.
