Product description

Released in 1996, "Down on the Upside" is the fifth studio album by the iconic American rock band Soundgarden. This 16-track collection, released under A&M Records, marks a significant point in the band's discography, blending elements of grunge, post-grunge, and hard rock into a cohesive and powerful sound. With a runtime of just over an hour, the album features a diverse range of tracks that showcase Soundgarden's versatility and musical prowess.

The album opens with "Pretty Noose," a hard-hitting track that sets the tone for the intensity and raw energy that follows. Standout tracks like "Burden in My Hand" and "Blow Up the Outside World" highlight the band's ability to craft memorable melodies and powerful riffs. "Zero Chance" and "Never the Machine Forever" delve into more experimental territories, showcasing the band's willingness to push musical boundaries.

The album's release in May 1996 came at a pivotal time in the music industry, as grunge began to evolve and diversify. This album captures the essence of Soundgarden's unique sound, making it a timeless addition to any rock music collection. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Soundgarden's music, "Down on the Upside" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

This is a 2025 Reissue Remastered released as a 2LP set.

  • Upside Sounds Incredible

    5 out of 5 stars
    Bnemwuv379November 10, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

After a few spins, I must say - this record sounds incredible! My copy of "Superunknown" has highs that are a bit too much, but "Upside" is a whole different ball game. It's really well-balanced and full of life. You can really tell the difference in quality when you go from a wild track like "Ty Cobb" to something more laid-back like "Blow Up The Outside World." Like others have mentioned, my copy didn't come with a hype sticker or DL card (I was more disappointed about the missing sticker, honestly) but it has the same matrix numbers. There's a 2016 date on the back cover, so I'm guessing they used the same stampers but skipped the sticker and card. I picked this up sealed for a little over $30 with free shipping on eBay from Europe, so I can't complain. Really happy with my purchase - grab this one if you come across it.

  • Rediscovered Audio Gem

I've got a 2016 version with a yellow label. I mentioned before that the audio on it was a bit muddy. I wasn't too fond of the sound, to the point where I considered selling my copy. But lately, I've upgraded my setup. Out of curiosity, I gave my least favorite records another listen. Not everything sounded better, but this one did. I'm genuinely enjoying the sound now. I'd say I've rediscovered the album, as I hadn't listened to it in ages.

  • Promo CD for Concert Snub

I got this as a make-up for Ticketmaster overbooking the Houston venue during the tour - I was turned away at the entrance despite having my ticket - first and only time that's ever happened to me - I've still got my promotional copy, though I'd have much preferred attending the concert - the bright side is, it's got awesome sound quality.

  • Vinyl Upgrade for Fans

    4 out of 5 stars
    petrauSeptember 17, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Clearly a step up from the CD version, though it doesn't quite match the finest rock vinyl pressings out there. If you're a fan of this album, you've got to experience it on vinyl. A shame it's Soundgarden's final '90s release, though.

  • Soundgarden's Second Best

Wow, this album is incredible! It's my second fav Soundgarden record and definitely worth getting.

About Soundgarden

Soundgarden, the pioneering American rock band from Seattle, Washington, burst onto the scene in 1984, blending the raw energy of grunge with the intensity of hard rock. Founded by the charismatic Chris Cornell on vocals and rhythm guitar, the innovative Kim Thayil on lead guitar, and Hiro Yamamoto on bass, the band's lineup evolved over the years, with Matt Cameron becoming a staple on drums and Ben Shepherd taking over on bass. Their discography, featuring iconic albums like "Ultramega OK" and "Superunknown," includes timeless hits such as "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell On Black Days." Soundgarden's powerful sound and Cornell's soaring vocals made them a cornerstone of the 90s rock landscape, influencing countless bands and leaving an indelible mark on the music world. Despite disbanding and reforming over the years, their legacy endures, celebrated by fans and musicians alike.
