  • Pablo's Midrange Magic

    5 out of 5 stars
    Xkark04August 29, 2025United States🇺🇸

This AP Pablo pressing boasts that magical midrange quality that's so hard to find on other records. If you're someone who loves to really hear into a recording, to almost "see" the musicians, and feel like you're right there in the studio with them, this is the album for you. Of course, that's based on my setup in my room and my ears. Joining Gillespie on this 1974 session were guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Mickey Roker. I'm not too familiar with Roker, but both Pass and Brown are incredible musicians who had successful solo careers as well as playing with others. The black-and-white cover photo of the four guys, dressed casually and just hanging out, really shows the relaxed vibe between them. My listening setup for this album is an Atmo Sfera High End Edition TT with an Ortofon Quintet Black S cart, Ref D Klimo tube Phono stage, Yamaha AS 501 amp, Klipsch Quartet speakers, and a BK Double Gem Subwoofer.

  • Tubey Magic with Gillespie

This AP Pablo pressing has the kind of Tubey Magical Midrange that many records rarely are able to reproduce. If you love hearing INTO a recording, actually being able to “see” the performers, and feeling as if you are sitting in the studio with the band, this is the record for you, of course that based on my kit in my room with my ears Joining Gillespie on this 1974 date were guitarist Joe Pass, bass player Ray Brown, and drummer Mickey Roker. Of Roker I don’t know much, but both Pass and Brown are outstanding musicians and had successful solo careers in addition to performing with other musicians. The black-and-white cover shot of the four men, casually dressed and hanging out provides an indication of the relaxed camaraderie between the players. Awesome collection. Diz is on point and Pass is, as always, top-notch. Brown and Roker provide fantastic backing. The pressing is superb. These 70s Pablo releases from the older jazz fans are often overlooked.

Awesome collection. Diz is on top of his game and Pass is, as always, fantastic. Brown and Roker provide top-notch backup. The pressing is superb. These Pablo sets from the 70s by these older boppers are often overlooked.

    BeriPevoFebruary 27, 2024United States🇺🇸

Wow, this album is absolutely amazing! The recording quality and pressing are top-notch. I bought it second-hand, and it's super quiet with an incredible sound stage. If you're out hunting for records and come across this one, definitely snag it! It's fantastic!

About Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy Gillespie, born John Birks Gillespie, was a towering figure in the world of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his pivotal role in the development of bebop. With his distinctive beret, horn-rimmed glasses, and trademark pouched cheeks, Gillespie's charismatic stage presence was as iconic as his innovative musical style. His bent trumpet, a result of an accidental collision with a fellow musician, became a symbol of his creative spirit and a visual hallmark of his performances.

Gillespie's musical journey began in his hometown of Cheraw, South Carolina, where he was introduced to various instruments by his father, an amateur bandleader. Influenced by jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, Gillespie honed his skills and eventually moved to Philadelphia, where his passion for music flourished. His virtuosic trumpet playing, characterized by its harmonic and rhythmic complexity, set him apart and made him a leading popularizer of bebop.

Throughout his career, Gillespie was not just a musician but also a bandleader, composer, and educator. He collaborated with numerous jazz greats, including Charlie Parker, and his bands were known for their dynamic performances and innovative compositions. Gillespie's influence extended beyond traditional jazz, as he championed Afro-Cuban rhythms and incorporated them into his music, enriching the jazz landscape.

Beyond his musical contributions, Gillespie was known for his wit, showmanship, and light-hearted personality. He even made two attempts to run for president of the United States, adding a touch of whimsy to his already legendary status. His legacy endures, inspiring generations of musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike, making Dizzy Gillespie a true icon of American music.
