Product description

Immerse yourself in the profound and evocative world of Hugo Distler's "Geistliche Chormusik, Op. 12," a masterful collection of choral works that showcase the composer's deep spiritual insight and musical genius. Released in 1994 under the Cantate label, this album spans a duration of 1 hour and 12 minutes, offering a rich tapestry of sacred choral music that resonates with both historical significance and timeless beauty.

The centerpiece of this album is the "Totentanz, Op. 12 No. 2," a series of 14 motets composed by Hugo Distler in 1934. Inspired by the themes of mortality and reflection, these motets were originally created for Totensonntag, a day of remembrance in the Lutheran calendar. Each of the 14 movements delves into different aspects of life and death, from the Kaiser and the Bishop to the Maiden and the Child, providing a comprehensive meditation on the human condition.

In addition to the "Totentanz," the album features other notable works by Distler, including "Ich wollt', dass ich daheime wär, Op. 12 No. 5," "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Op. 12 No. 6," and "Fürwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit, Op. 12 No. 9." These pieces, along with the rest of the album, exemplify Distler's ability to blend traditional choral techniques with innovative compositional approaches, resulting in a body of work that is both reverent and forward-thinking.

Hugo Distler, a prominent German organist, choral conductor, teacher, and composer, left an indelible mark on the world of sacred music. His compositions, characterized by their depth and complexity, continue to inspire and captivate audiences. "Geistliche Chormusik, Op. 12" is a testament to his enduring legacy, offering listeners a chance to experience the profound beauty of his choral works.

Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast of choral music or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a deeply enriching listening experience. The Berlin Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Bernd Stegmann, brings Distler's compositions to life with precision and passion, ensuring that each note and each word resonates with clarity and meaning.

About Hugo Distler

Hugo Distler, born in Nuremberg in 1908, was a prolific German composer, organist, and choral conductor whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 34. Despite his brief career, Distler left an indelible mark on the world of sacred choral music, known for his innovative harmonic language and neo-Baroque style. His compositions, such as the Mörike-Chorliederbuch and the Choralpassion, are celebrated for their polyphonic richness and emotional depth. Distler's journey took him from his early musical training in Nuremberg to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he honed his skills in organ and composition. He later taught at prestigious institutions in Spandau and Stuttgart, inspiring a new generation of musicians. However, his life was marred by conflict with the Nazi regime, ultimately leading to his suicide in 1942. Distler's music continues to resonate with its haunting beauty and individuality, offering a profound spiritual experience for all who encounter it.
