Product description

David Hackbridge Johnson's "Orchestral Music, Vol. 3" is a captivating journey through the composer's intricate and evocative orchestral works. Released on April 5, 2019, under the Toccata Classics label, this album is a testament to Johnson's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create vivid musical landscapes.

The album features the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Paul Mann, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance of eight distinct pieces. The compositions span a range of moods and styles, from the delicate and introspective "Aspens, Op. 362" to the dynamic and fiery "Symphony No. 15, Op. 361 No. 3 'Where the Wind Is Born'." Each piece is meticulously crafted, showcasing Johnson's unique voice and his deep understanding of orchestral color and texture.

Highlights include the hauntingly beautiful "2 Elegies for Strings & Harp, Op. 159," the rhythmic and driving "Ziggurats, Op. 251," and the sweeping, three-movement "Symphony No. 15." The album also includes the charming and playful "Valse mérovingienne, Op. 77a," a delightful contrast to the more serious and profound works.

With a total runtime of just over an hour, "Orchestral Music, Vol. 3" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of David Hackbridge Johnson or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to impress and inspire.

About David Hackbridge Johnson

David Hackbridge Johnson, born in Carshalton, England in 1963, is a prolific and versatile composer whose extensive catalog of works spans symphonies, chamber music, vocal, and choral compositions. With over 500 works to his name, including 15 symphonies, 10 string quartets, and 19 piano sonatas, Johnson's music is a testament to his deep understanding of various genres and his ability to create compelling, expressive pieces. Beginning his musical journey at the age of 11, Johnson's early passion for composition led him to form an orchestra at 17 to perform Shostakovich's 8th Symphony. His eclectic background, which includes playing violin in theatre orchestras and performing as a jazz pianist and drummer, adds a unique depth to his compositions. Despite his prolific output, Johnson remains one of classical music's best-kept secrets, with many of his works still underexposed. His music, characterized by its emotional resonance and technical prowess, offers a rich and rewarding experience for those who discover it.
