Product description

Immerse yourself in the hauntingly beautiful world of Jean Cras' "Polypheme," a lyrical tragedy that stands as the composer's magnum opus. This captivating opera, inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of Cras' native Brittany, was met with acclaim at its 1922 premiere, catapulting the French composer and naval officer into the spotlight. Spanning nearly two and a half hours, this 18-track masterpiece is a testament to Cras' unique musical vision, blending the influences of his mentor Henri Duparc with his own distinctive style.

Recorded by the Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Bramwell Tovey, this 2003 release on the Timpani label brings to life the dramatic tale of Polypheme, a one-eyed giant from Greek mythology, and his tragic love for the nymph Galatea. The opera's intricate score and evocative storytelling make it a compelling journey through the complexities of love, jealousy, and loss.

Jean Cras' "Polypheme" is not just an opera; it's an exploration of the human condition, set against the backdrop of myth and the rugged beauty of Brittany. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that showcases the extraordinary talent of Jean Cras.

About Jean Cras

Jean Cras, a 20th-century French composer, led a dual life as a gifted musician and a distinguished naval officer. Born in Brest in 1879, Cras's compositions were deeply influenced by his native Brittany, his travels to Africa, and his extensive naval career, which culminated in his promotion to rear-admiral. Despite his demanding naval duties, Cras created a significant body of work, particularly in chamber music and opera. His most renowned opera, "Polyphème," showcases his unique musical voice and has been praised for its hypnotic and marvelous qualities. Cras's String Trio, composed in 1926, is another notable work that highlights his compositional prowess. Though his naval career may have limited his musical fame, Cras's works continue to captivate audiences and stand as a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication to both music and service.
