This one's a bit of a head-scratcher. Gismonti certainly didn't hold back on the futuristic aspect right from the get-go, with that opening track sounding like it's beamed in from the future. It's a bit of a shock, then, when he suddenly goes all acoustic (rumor has it that a stint with the locals in the Amazon had something to do with that). For the casual listener, it might be a bit too much to handle, with all those outdated synths potentially turning them off completely. Just compare the version of "Dança das Cabeças" here with the one he did with Nana Vasconcelos the following year. I also found the vocals in "Carmo" to be a bit lackluster, even if the composition itself is gorgeous. But everything else is absolutely worth your time, especially that epic suite on the second side. "Baião de Acordar" is a fantastic, stylish take on the Novelli tune, with top-notch arranging and production finally bringing all those synths, strings, and winds together in perfect harmony with the rhythm section. It all builds up to an incredible climax with that sax solo. It's a bit uneven overall, but it's a great showcase of Gismonti's unique "old meets new" vision at the time. And that stunning picture sleeve? I could just frame the heart anywhere in my house, I love it that much. But I can say with confidence that "Academia De Danças" is the better record all around (and that "Carmo" is a bit weaker).
