Product description

Dive into the profound and introspective world of Christoph Graupner with his compelling collection of Passion cantatas, "Wo gehet Jesus hin." Released in 2011, this album is a masterful blend of historical depth and musical brilliance, featuring some of Graupner's most moving compositions. The album spans over an hour and ten minutes, offering a rich tapestry of seven distinct cantatas, each divided into multiple movements, providing a comprehensive exploration of Graupner's artistic vision.

Performed by the esteemed Ensemble Concerto Grosso and the Anton-Webern-Chor Freiburg, under the direction of Hans Michael Beuerle, this recording captures the essence of Graupner's work with precision and passion. The album was recorded in March 2011 at the Martinskirche in Müllheim, Baden, ensuring an authentic and resonant acoustic experience.

Graupner's compositions, such as "Wir wissen, dass Trübsal Geduld bringet" and "Mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen," delve into themes of faith, suffering, and redemption, reflecting the spiritual and philosophical inquiries of his time. Each cantata is a journey through the human condition, framed within the context of religious devotion and personal reflection.

This album is not just a collection of songs but a testament to Christoph Graupner's enduring legacy as a composer. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the lesser-known but equally significant works of the Baroque era, providing a deeper understanding of the period's musical and cultural landscape. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Wo gehet Jesus hin" promises an enriching and enlightening listening experience.

About Christoph Graupner

Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) was a German composer and harpsichordist who, despite being one of the leading figures of the late Baroque era, remains one of its most underappreciated masters. Born in Kirchberg, Saxony, Graupner's musical journey saw him create a vast array of works, from operas to symphonies, that rivaled those of his contemporaries Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. His compositions, characterized by their intricate harmonies and expressive melodies, span a wide range of genres, including concertos, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and keyboard works. Graupner's prolific output and innovative style make him a key figure in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era, offering listeners a rich tapestry of musical experiences that continue to captivate and inspire.
