This album has quite a few issues. The lyrics, while conscious, come off as a bit preachy and don't offer anything fresh (I've heard similar stuff from others before). Don't misunderstand, I'm happy to see the conscious movement growing, but there needs to be a better balance between the message, creativity (or lack thereof), and overall quality. Middle Eastern vocal samples are used way too much, and Vadim's beats, for once, feel a bit too predictable. The female vocals/rap parts don't really enhance the tracks and just make me want to skip them. In the end, it's a letdown in both execution and originality.
Thick beats and fire rhymes are always in fashion ... Standout track: Hollow Human Beings ... Also diggin' the 'Children Of Instrumentals' drop!
Oh, it's a tough gig for the thoughtful hip-hop scene. Always playing second fiddle to its louder siblings, it often gets shoved to the side. One Self, thankfully, brings a solid player to the table with CHILDREN OF POSSIBILITY, especially with the Middle Eastern vibes of "Fear the Labour." The words here pack a punch, especially from Yarah Bravo, who's got a cool, crisp way of delivering them (give "Over Exposed" a listen for that anti-porn groove). DJ Vadim's beats are all about that smooth, smoky feel. "Trying to Speak" dips into some dancehall, but I'm more into the Indian raga samples of "Be Your Own," which really lets that stuttering rhythm shine. He gets funky with "Bluebird" and goes all out on the instrumental "SD2," while "Unfamiliar Places" hits that sweet soul spot. Even if this album feels like a one-time thing, it's still bursting with potential.
