Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Ernest Chausson with this captivating album, released on September 27, 2016, by Les Indispensables de Diapason. This collection of chamber music masterpieces showcases Chausson's unique ability to blend romance, drama, and lyrical beauty into his compositions.

The album opens with "Poème de l'amour et de la mer, Op. 19," a hauntingly beautiful vocal work recorded in 1955. The piece is divided into two parts, "La fleur des eaux" and "La mort de l'amour," with an interlude that seamlessly connects the two. The evocative poetry and Chausson's rich harmonies create a deeply moving experience.

Next, the "Poème pour violon et orchestre, Op. 25" recorded in 1953, features the renowned violinist Christian Ferras. This piece, with its mysterious and introspective Lento e misterioso, highlights Chausson's skill in writing for the violin and showcases Ferras' virtuosic talent.

The album concludes with the "Symphonie in B-Flat Major, Op. 20," recorded in 1950. This three-movement symphony is a tour de force, filled with dynamic contrasts and rich orchestration. The movements, "Lent - Allegro vivo," "Très lent," and "Animé," display Chausson's mastery of symphonic writing and his ability to create a cohesive and compelling musical narrative.

The album also includes "2 Mélodies, Op. 36: I. Cantique à l'épouse, 'Épouse au front lumineux,'" recorded in 1955. This beautiful vocal piece, with its tender and intimate setting, provides a perfect conclusion to this remarkable collection.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 23 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of Chausson's musical genius. The performances by Irma Kolassi, Christian Ferras, and Pierre Monteux are nothing short of exceptional, bringing Chausson's compositions to life with passion and precision. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Ernest Chausson

Ernest Chausson, a prominent figure in French Romantic music, left an indelible mark on the late 19th-century musical landscape despite his tragically short life. Born into an affluent Parisian family, Chausson initially pursued law but soon turned his passion to music, studying under the esteemed Jules Massenet and César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. His compositions, though relatively few in number, are celebrated for their originality and beguiling charm. Chausson's works span various genres, including chamber music, orchestral pieces, operas, and songs, each imbued with a unique blend of Wagnerian lyricism and French harmonic finesse. Among his most notable works is the "Poème" for violin and orchestra, a piece that began as a symphonic poem but evolved into a concertante character piece. Chausson's untimely death in a bicycle accident at the age of 44 cut short a promising career, but his legacy endures, influencing future generations of composers and captivating audiences with his evocative and deeply personal music.
