Product description

Dive into the world of French opera with Ernest Chausson's sole contribution to the genre, "Le roi Arthus, Op. 23." This three-act opera, composed between 1886 and 1895, is a powerful exploration of the legendary King Arthur's struggle with betrayal and his unwavering spiritual idealism. Chausson's own libretto brings a unique perspective to the Arthurian legend, focusing on the noble king's response to the infidelity of his wife, Guinevere.

This 2005 release by Telarc features a stellar cast, including baritone Andrew Schroeder as King Arthur, Susan Bullock as Lady Guinevere, and Simon O'Neill as Sir Lancelot. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leon Botstein, delivers a compelling performance that brings Chausson's complex score to life. With a running time of 2 hours and 46 minutes, this album offers an immersive experience into Chausson's dramatic and evocative musical language.

"Le roi Arthus, Op. 23" is a significant work in the chamber music genre, showcasing Chausson's mastery of orchestration and his ability to convey deep human drama through music. Whether you're a fan of opera, classical music, or simply appreciate a well-crafted story, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Ernest Chausson

Ernest Chausson, a prominent figure in French Romantic music, left an indelible mark on the late 19th-century musical landscape despite his tragically short life. Born into an affluent Parisian family, Chausson initially pursued law but soon turned his passion to music, studying under the esteemed Jules Massenet and César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. His compositions, though relatively few in number, are celebrated for their originality and beguiling charm. Chausson's works span various genres, including chamber music, orchestral pieces, operas, and songs, each imbued with a unique blend of Wagnerian lyricism and French harmonic finesse. Among his most notable works is the "Poème" for violin and orchestra, a piece that began as a symphonic poem but evolved into a concertante character piece. Chausson's untimely death in a bicycle accident at the age of 44 cut short a promising career, but his legacy endures, influencing future generations of composers and captivating audiences with his evocative and deeply personal music.
