Product description

Charlie Haden's "The Private Collection" is a captivating live album that showcases the legendary jazz bassist's extraordinary talent and versatility. Released in 2007, this double album spans a remarkable two hours and twenty-eight minutes, featuring thirteen tracks that highlight Haden's mastery of various jazz styles, including bop, modal, and contemporary jazz. Recorded in 1987, the album offers a unique glimpse into Haden's live performances, capturing the energy and spontaneity of his playing.

The album opens with "Hermitage," setting the stage for a journey through Haden's musical journey. Tracks like "Passport" and "Nardis" demonstrate his ability to blend cool jazz sensibilities with free jazz improvisation, while "Segment" and "Etudes" showcase his compositional prowess. The two-part "Farmer's Trust" offers a poignant and introspective moment, reflecting Haden's deep connection to his roots and his ability to convey profound narratives through his music.

"Lonely Woman" is a standout track, featuring Haden's haunting bass lines and a poignant melody that underscores his ability to evoke deep emotions. The album also includes a beautiful rendition of "Body & Soul," a classic jazz standard that Haden reinterprets with his signature touch. The closing track, "Visa," brings the album to a satisfying conclusion, leaving the audience with a sense of the rich musical journey they've experienced.

"The Private Collection" is not just a compilation of live performances; it's a testament to Charlie Haden's enduring legacy as one of the most influential bassists in jazz history. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of Haden's artistry, making it a valuable addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection.

About Charlie Haden

Charlie Haden, born Charles Edward Haden in 1937, was a pioneering American jazz double bass player, bandleader, composer, and educator whose influence spans over five decades. Haden is renowned for his groundbreaking work with saxophonist Ornette Coleman in the late 1950s, where he helped to define the free jazz movement. His innovative approach to bass playing revolutionized the instrument's role in jazz, often moving independently of the soloist and liberating bassists from traditional accompanying roles. Haden's versatility allowed him to master a wide range of jazz styles, drawing from his country music roots. Notable collaborations include his work with Keith Jarrett, resulting in the acclaimed albums "Jasmine" and "Last Dance." Haden's legacy continues to inspire, celebrated for his extraordinary vision and ability on the double bass.
