Similar to Madvillainy, the sound quality is excellent, crisp and clear with zero surface noise. I'm really diggin' the color scheme on these more than the Madvillainy ones, honestly. Would've loved to have the original versions of "The Red" and "No Games" included, but can't hold that against HHV. Still, it's an incredible collab album by two legends in the game!
The inclusion of the original versions of "The Red" and "No Games" alone is invaluable, but this entire pressing sounds so much clearer and richer than any of the reissues I've come across. It's quite a challenge to track down, particularly at a fair price, but trust me, it's absolutely worth the effort.
This reissue is genuinely well-done. The case, liner notes, and tape quality are all top-notch. The packaging is quite simple, which works just fine. It's a basic fold-out with the image and tracklist on the reverse. There's no artwork on the tape itself, just a mock spraypaint effect displaying the album title. As for the sound quality, it's fantastic in my opinion. It's got that classic warm cassette sound. There's no excessive hissing, and the bass hits really well. I'd say it's a great release for the cassette format. I haven't heard the vinyl version, but I'd wager this is just as good, and a more budget-friendly option if you're after an analog copy. My standout tracks are: "Champion Sound", "The Red", "The Heist", "React", "Survival Test", "Starz", and "No Games". "The Heist" is a track I'd particularly like to highlight. For me, it's one of the best on the album. Jay Dee's production is a perfect fit for Madlib's storytelling, obscure, lyrical style. The sample from 'Persuasion' by Throbbing Gristle is spot on. It gives the track an eerie, off-kilter vibe that complements the unusual vocal delivery. Another thing I appreciate about it is that it's about this dark and twisted heist scenario, but it's also one of the funnier moments on the tape.
Madlib's second finest collab album, after Madvillainy of course. If you were a fan of that one, you might just enjoy this one too. Both artists at their absolute peak, constantly creating, pushing boundaries, and likely under the influence more often than not. A solid 5-star effort.
Absolutely adore the snippet of Kraftwerk's 'Ohm Sweet Ohm' from the 'Radio-Aktivität' album that closes 'No Games'.
