Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Alexis de Castillon's classical masterpieces with the album "Castillon: Concerto pour piano, Op. 12 & Esquisses symphoniques, Op. 15." Released in 1986 under Warner Classics, this album showcases the brilliance of Castillon's compositions, performed by the renowned Aldo Ciccolini on piano, accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo under the direction of Georges Prêtre.

The album opens with the Piano Concerto in D Major, Op. 12, a three-movement work that highlights Castillon's virtuosity and emotional depth. The first movement, "Allegro moderato," sets a lively yet moderate pace, while the second movement, "Molto lento," offers a poignant and reflective interlude. The concerto concludes with the energetic and fiery "Allegro con fuoco."

The second half of the album features the Esquisses symphoniques, Op. 15, a four-movement suite that showcases Castillon's skill in orchestration and composition. The "Prélude" sets the stage with a dramatic and evocative introduction, followed by the graceful and elegant "Gavotte." The "Allegretto" provides a playful and lighthearted contrast, leading to the final movement, "Retour du prélude et finale," which brings the suite to a triumphant close.

Born in Monaco, Alexis de Castillon was a prolific composer and musician who studied at the conservatories of Turin and Paris. His works are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate structures. This album is a testament to Castillon's enduring legacy and his contributions to the classical music repertoire.

With a total duration of 55 minutes, this album is a must-listen for fans of classical music and anyone looking to discover the timeless beauty of Alexis de Castillon's compositions.

About Alexis de Castillon

Alexis-Marie de Castillon de Saint-Victor, known as Alexis de Castillon, was a notable French composer whose works have left a lasting impression on the classical music landscape. Born in 1838, Castillon's compositions span a variety of genres, including piano concertos, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. His piano concerto, premiered in 1872 with the renowned Camille Saint-Saëns as the soloist, showcases his mastery of the form. Castillon's collaboration with Saint-Saëns extended beyond this performance; together, they co-founded the Société Nationale de Musique, an organisation dedicated to promoting French music. Castillon's oeuvre includes the charming '6 Valses Humoristiques' for piano and a violin sonata, which has been recorded for the first time. His chamber music, such as the Quartet, Op. 3, continues to be celebrated and performed, offering listeners a glimpse into the rich musical heritage of 19th-century France.
