Product description

Jean Ritchie's "Carols for All Seasons" is a delightful collection of traditional folk carols, released in 1997 under the Tradition Records label. This album is a treasure trove of Appalachian music, featuring 17 tracks that span a mere 36 minutes, making it a perfect, concise celebration of holiday and seasonal music. Ritchie's warm, inviting voice brings to life a variety of traditional songs, ranging from the lively "The Pig Went Out to Dig" to the serene "Brightest and Best."

The album is a blend of traditional folk, bluegrass, and even touches of Southern Gothic, showcasing Ritchie's deep roots in Appalachian culture. Each track is a testament to her musical heritage, with songs like "The Carnal and the Crane" and "I Saw Three Ships" offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of folk music. The inclusion of lesser-known carols such as "The Holy Well" and "The Little Family" adds a unique charm to the collection, making it a standout in the realm of seasonal music.

Recorded with classical musicians, the album benefits from a refined yet authentic sound that highlights the beauty of these traditional tunes. Whether you're a fan of folk music or simply looking for a joyous holiday celebration, "Carols for All Seasons" is a wonderful introduction to Jean Ritchie's enchanting musical world.

About Jean Ritchie

Jean Ritchie, a luminary of the 1950s folk revival, was an American folk singer, songwriter, and master of the Appalachian dulcimer. Born in Viper, Kentucky, in 1922, Ritchie was a one-woman treasure trove of near-forgotten American folk songs, many of which she learned from her family's rich musical heritage. By the time of her passing in 2015, she had recorded over 30 albums and authored seven books, leaving an indelible mark on the folk music scene. Ritchie's influence was profound, introducing the dulcimer to wider audiences and captivating listeners with her traditional folk, bluegrass, and southern gothic sounds. Her music is a testament to her deep roots and enduring legacy in American folk music.
