Broadway - Al Cohn

Product description

Dive into the cool, sophisticated world of Al Cohn with his 1992 album "Broadway," a timeless collection that showcases the masterful saxophonist's prowess in cool jazz and hard bop. This album, released under the Original Jazz Classics label, is a testament to Cohn's enduring legacy in the jazz genre, offering a blend of instrumental tracks and live takes that highlight his versatility and artistry.

"Broadway" opens with the instrumental "Help Keep Your City Clean Blues," a track that sets the tone with its smooth, melodic lines and intricate improvisations. The album then delves into two takes of the title track, "Broadway," each offering a unique perspective on Cohn's compositional skills and improvisational genius. The first take is a sprawling, nine-minute exploration, while the second is a more concise, seven-minute version that packs a punch with its tight ensemble playing.

The album also features two takes of "Suddenly It's Spring," a beautiful ballad that showcases Cohn's lyrical side, as well as an instrumental "Ballad Medley" that highlights his arranging talents. Throughout the album, Cohn's tenor saxophone is the star, its warm, velvety tone cutting through the ensemble with ease.

With a running time of just under 46 minutes, "Broadway" is a concise yet powerful statement from one of jazz's most respected figures. Whether you're a longtime fan of Al Cohn or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

This 1970 Remastered LP is pressed on Blue vinyl.

About Al Cohn

Al Cohn, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1925, was a renowned jazz saxophonist, arranger, and composer whose career spanned over four decades. He rose to fame in the 1940s as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd, where he was part of the celebrated "Four Brothers" saxophone section. Cohn's smooth tenor saxophone style and impeccable arrangements made him a standout figure in the cool jazz and hard bop genres. Throughout his career, he performed with legendary bands led by Henry Jerome, Joe Marsala, Georgie Auld, Alvino Rey, and Buddy Rich, among others. Cohn's compositions were so highly regarded that even Miles Davis recorded an album featuring his works. His legacy endures as a testament to his skill and influence in the jazz world, with his music continuing to captivate audiences.
