About Wilhelm Backhaus

Wilhelm Backhaus, born in Leipzig in 1884, was a titan of the classical piano world, renowned for his profound interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms. His career spanned an astonishing 61 years, making him one of the longest-recording pianists in history. Backhaus was not just a virtuoso but also a dedicated pedagogue, committed to the composers' intentions and admired for his chamber music collaborations. He was a pioneer in the recording industry, joining The Gramophone Company/HMV early on and leaving behind a rich legacy of performances that continue to inspire. Backhaus' preference for playing on C. Bechstein grands added a unique timbre to his recordings, which are celebrated for their depth and modernity.
