Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of classical piano with Benjamin Frith's remarkable 1999 album, "Brahms / Mendelssohn: Piano Concertos." This exquisite collection showcases Frith's virtuosity and deep musical insight, featuring two iconic piano concertos by Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn.

From the age of ten, Benjamin Frith studied under the renowned Fanny Waterman and won the National Concerto Competition at just fourteen, hinting at the extraordinary talent that shines through in this album. The first half of the album is dedicated to Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15, a work known for its dramatic intensity and lyrical beauty. Frith's performance is both powerful and nuanced, capturing the essence of Brahms' complex compositions.

The second half of the album presents Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 40, a piece that highlights the composer's lyrical genius and structural innovation. Frith's interpretation is both sensitive and dynamic, bringing out the full range of emotions in Mendelssohn's music.

Accompanied by the Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra, Frith's playing is nothing short of breathtaking. The album's duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes offers a rich and fulfilling listening experience, perfect for classical music enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Recorded in 1999 and released under the Naxos label, this album is a testament to Frith's enduring legacy as one of the most distinguished pianists of our time.

About Benjamin Frith

Benjamin Frith is a distinguished British classical pianist, born in South Yorkshire, England, on 11 October 1957. His musical journey began at the tender age of ten under the tutelage of the renowned Fanny Waterman. By fourteen, he had already made a significant mark by winning the National Concerto Competition in Dudley. Frith's repertoire is impressively diverse, spanning from the timeless works of Bach and Scarlatti to the modern compositions of Tippett. Beyond his solo performances, he is also a cherished member of the Gould Piano Trio and the founder of the Frith Piano Quartet. His collaborations extend to notable ensembles like the Endellion and Dante string quartets, and he frequently performs piano duos with Peter Hill. Frith's deep connection with the Steinway piano, which began in his childhood, adds a personal touch to his performances. His recordings, including a notable survey of John Field's piano concertos, have left a lasting impression on classical music enthusiasts.
