Product description

Max Reger's captivating album, Brahms / Liszt / Reger: Klavierduo, is a masterful collection of works for two pianos, released on 1 January 2009 by Ars Musici. This exquisite recording showcases Reger's skillful interpretations of renowned compositions, including Brahms' Variationen über ein Thema von Haydn and Beethoven's Variationen und Fuge. The album's duration of one hour is filled with a rich tapestry of sounds, as Reger brings to life the intricate nuances of these beloved pieces.

With his impeccable technique and deep understanding of the repertoire, Reger navigates the complexities of these works with ease, conveying the emotional depth and expressive qualities that have made them timeless classics. The inclusion of Liszt's Reminiscences de Don Juan, arranged for two pianos by Volker Stenzl, adds a touch of drama and flair to the album, rounding out the programme with a sense of grandeur and spectacle.

Throughout the album, Reger's passion for the music shines through, as he coaxes a wide range of tonal colours and textures from the two pianos. The result is a recording that is at once refined, elegant, and deeply satisfying, offering a compelling portrait of Reger's artistry and a testament to the enduring power of these iconic compositions.

About Max Reger

Max Reger, born Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger in 1873, was a towering figure in German music, straddling the late Romantic and early Modernist eras. A prolific composer, pianist, organist, and conductor, Reger's music is renowned for its complexity and emotional depth, particularly his monumental fugues and organ works. Born in Brand, Bavaria, Reger's musical journey began under the tutelage of his parents and the local organist, leading him to become one of the most significant composers of organ music since Bach. His compositions, which include magnificent chorale-based and free works, reflect both the grandeur of German Romanticism and the innovative spirit of Modernism. Reger's legacy endures, celebrated by figures such as Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schoenberg, and his music continues to captivate audiences with its structural coherence and emotional resonance.
