Product description

Arnold Schoenberg's 'Boulez A-Z: Schoenberg - Strauss' is a captivating classical album, released on 26 January 2025 by Deutsche Grammophon. This extensive collection, spanning 2 hours and 42 minutes, showcases Schoenberg's innovative and expressive compositions. The album features a range of notable works, including 'Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5', 'Piano Concerto, Op. 42', and 'Pierrot Lunaire, Op. 21', which demonstrate Schoenberg's mastery of orchestration and his ability to evoke powerful emotions through music.

The 'Pelleas und Melisande' suite, performed live, presents a dramatic and intricate soundscape, with each movement showcasing a unique aspect of Schoenberg's compositional style. In contrast, the 'Piano Concerto' offers a more intimate and personal perspective, with its four movements exploring a range of moods and textures.

The 'Pierrot Lunaire' cycle, a seminal work in Schoenberg's oeuvre, is a testament to his innovative spirit and his willingness to push the boundaries of traditional classical music. This melodrama, set to Albert Giraud's poetry, is a haunting and atmospheric exploration of the human experience.

The album also features excerpts from 'Moses und Aron', an opera that showcases Schoenberg's ability to craft complex, nuanced characters and storylines. These scenes offer a glimpse into the opera's dramatic and philosophical themes, highlighting Schoenberg's unique blend of musical and intellectual curiosity.

Throughout 'Boulez A-Z: Schoenberg - Strauss', Arnold Schoenberg's music is characterized by its intensity, complexity, and emotional depth. This album is a must-listen for fans of classical music, offering a rich and rewarding exploration of Schoenberg's innovative and expressive compositional style.

About Arnold Schoenberg

Arnold Schoenberg, born in Vienna in 1874, was a revolutionary figure in 20th-century classical music, renowned for his groundbreaking compositions and theoretical innovations. As a composer, Schoenberg was among the first to challenge traditional harmony, pioneering atonality and developing the twelve-tone technique, which uses a specific order of all twelve pitches in the chromatic scale. This method, also known as serialism, had a profound impact on the course of modern music.

Schoenberg's music is characterized by its use of motives to create coherence and his exploration of dissonance. He was also a prolific writer and teacher, influencing generations of composers, including Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Beyond music, Schoenberg was a multifaceted artist who also painted and invented. His legacy extends far beyond his compositions, encompassing his influential teachings and writings that continue to shape the way we understand and create music today. Schoenberg's journey from his early works to his atonal innovations and twelve-tone technique is a testament to his enduring influence on classical music.
