About Frank Wess

Frank Wess, born in Kansas City, Missouri, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on both saxophone and flute. His career spanned an impressive seven decades, with a significant portion dedicated to his role as a key member of the Count Basie Orchestra. Wess was one of the first major jazz flutists, bringing a unique and melodic voice to the instrument. His tenor saxophone playing was deeply influenced by the legendary Lester Young, while his alto saxophone work was equally impressive. Beyond his instrumental prowess, Wess was also a skilled composer and arranger, contributing to the rich tapestry of jazz music. His extensive solo work and collaborations have left an indelible mark on the genre, making him a true jazz master. Wess passed away in Manhattan, New York, in 2013, but his musical legacy continues to inspire and captivate fans and musicians alike.
