BlockBusta" is Busta Rhymes trying to force a mismatch, like stuffing a square peg in a round hole. The union of 90's Hip-Hop royalty with today's rap nonsense is downright cringe-worthy on this album. I won't be giving this record another listen, that's for sure. The trio of producers who shone on Jay's "S. Carter Collection" fall flat here. Timbo, Pharell, and Swizz all seem to be going through the motions, but the standout tracks come from DJ Tedsmooth ("SLIDE") and Focus ... ("If You Don't Know Now You Know Pt. 2). How did The Game drop a better legacy record with his son on "The Documentary II" featuring Busta, than Busta himself did here with his own kids? "Block Busta" comes off as a collection of leftovers when Buss goes solo, and when he teams up with the new chart-toppers, he just phones it in to hype them up—though he still outshines them on every track. But I can't stand listening to two-minute songs just for one Busta verse and a half-baked hook, while the rest is filled with artists I'd never listen to otherwise. Busta Rhymes ain't Travi$ Scott (whose "I Know" makes more sense as a UGK nod than the weird mess of "Big Everything," where Da Baby drags on about oral sex way too long). Maybe Busta's been around DJ Khaled too much, because he tried his hand at curating here and failed miserably.
