Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, expressive world of Ernest Bloch's evocative compositions with this captivating album, featuring the stunning performances of Hong-Mei Xiao and the MÁV Symphony Orchestra. Released on Naxos in 2013, this collection showcases Bloch's masterful blending of Eastern European Hasidic traditions and Orientalist influences, creating a tapestry of sound that is both intense and deeply moving.

The album opens with Bloch's "Baal Shem," a trio of pieces that delve into the heart of Hasidic musical expression. Arranged for viola and orchestra by Hong-Mei Xiao, these works are imbued with a sense of spiritual depth and emotional intensity. Following this, the "Suite for Viola and Orchestra" unfolds with a series of movements that range from the hauntingly beautiful to the energetically playful. The suite's central nocturne is a standout, showcasing Bloch's orchestration skills and his ability to evoke a sense of mystery and allure.

The album concludes with the "Suite hébraïque," a trio of pieces that further explore Bloch's fascination with Jewish musical traditions. From the rhythmic vitality of "Rapsodie" to the solemn grandeur of "Affirmation," these works demonstrate Bloch's ability to convey a wide range of emotions and moods.

Throughout the album, Hong-Mei Xiao's virtuoso playing is a constant source of delight, her technical brilliance and expressive depth bringing Bloch's compositions to life in vivid detail. The MÁV Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mariusz Smolij, provides a lush and nuanced backdrop, their playing perfectly complementing Xiao's viola.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Bloch's music or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a compelling introduction to the composer's unique sound world. With its blend of technical virtuosity, emotional depth, and cultural richness, it is a testament to Bloch's enduring appeal and a must-listen for anyone interested in the best of classical music.
