Product description

Experience the profound and introspective solo piano masterpiece "Black Orpheus" by Masabumi Kikuchi, a testament to the late Japanese pianist's unique and deeply personal musical vision. Recorded live in Tokyo on October 26, 2012, this album captures Kikuchi's final solo recital, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into his artistic prowess.

"Black Orpheus" is a collection of ten original compositions by Kikuchi, along with a touching rendition of Luiz Bonfa's "Manhã De Carnaval." Each piece is a testament to Kikuchi's ability to blend contemporary and free jazz elements, creating a sound that is both stark and deeply moving. The album's duration of 70 minutes is divided into eleven tracks, each offering a distinct yet cohesive exploration of Kikuchi's musical genius.

Kikuchi's playing is characterized by its ruminative quality, with moments of delicate introspection interspersed with sudden bursts of intensity. His approach to the solo piano format is innovative and idiosyncratic, reflecting his extensive experience collaborating with jazz legends such as Elvin Jones, Gil Evans, and Joe Henderson.

The album's standout tracks include "Tokyo - Pt. I" through "Tokyo - Pt. IX," which showcase Kikuchi's ability to build complex, layered compositions from simple motifs. "Little Abi," a heartfelt ballad dedicated to his daughter, provides a poignant contrast to the more abstract pieces.

"Black Orpheus" is a fitting tribute to Masabumi Kikuchi's enduring legacy, capturing the essence of his late style and individuality. Released on April 1, 2016, by ECM Records, this album is a essential addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection, offering a deep and rewarding listening experience.
