This album, released on January 1, 2021, under the label Charlie Parker: Bird in LA, offers an unparalleled journey through the evolution of jazz, spanning from 1945 to 1952. With a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes, it's a comprehensive exploration of Charlie Parker's genius, featuring a blend of bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, and jazz blues.

The album kicks off with live recordings from Billy Berg's Supper Club in 1945, where Charlie Parker's innovative style was just beginning to captivate audiences. Tracks like "How High The Moon" and "Dizzy Atmosphere" showcase Parker's groundbreaking improvisational skills and his influence on the jazz scene. The album also includes performances from NBC Studios, The Finale Club, and the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, providing a rich tapestry of Parker's live performances over several years.

Highlights include the iconic "Salt Peanuts," a collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie, and the intricate "Ornithology," a testament to Parker's compositional prowess. The album also features lesser-known gems like "Cement Mixer" and "Fifty-Second Street Theme," offering a deeper look into Parker's repertoire.

"Bird In LA" is not just a collection of songs; it's a historical document that captures the essence of a revolutionary period in jazz. • Vintage Jazz Vinyl Mixed Quality

    3 out of 5 stars
    hugzyay.mubnemOctober 23, 2025United States🇺🇸

It's a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. Considering these recordings date back to 1945, it's pretty impressive overall. Just don't expect top-notch Audiophile Jazz quality. Some parts sound fantastic, while others leave something to be desired. The vinyl was a bit dirty, but after a good cleaning, it played alright with the usual pops and clicks here and there. The box it came in is quite nice, though.

  • Deep Scratches, Poor Quality

    1 out of 5 stars
    niiq3999October 18, 2025United States🇺🇸

Each side of every single disc was filled with scratches so deep that it messed up the playback. I'm really let down, clearly there was no quality check done.

  • Disappointing Record Quality

    1 out of 5 stars
    fyzuho49June 16, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm wishing someone will sell record 4. Just took it out of the sleeve for the first time and it's got a bunch of noticeable, deep scratches on it. Next time Verve puts out a box set, I'll wait to check the quality before I spend $100 on it.

  • Parker's Overrated Debut

    4 out of 5 stars
    keduzx3March 5, 2025United States🇺🇸

Only for those who have everything. Not the best starting point for Parker's music. I'd suggest getting the Dial or Savoy versions first before this one.

  • Energetic Bops Despite Source Quality

    4 out of 5 stars
    orjz75February 11, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Fortunately, my copy is clear of any QC problems. The pressing is nice and flat, with no dirt or debris. The packaging and booklet are absolutely gorgeous. The performances are bursting with energy and fun. However, the quality of the source material isn't the best. But that's to be expected, given when and how it was recorded. Don't expect crystal-clear, dynamic studio recordings. If you're into bops, it's a worthwhile addition to your collection.

About Charlie Parker

Charlie Parker, affectionately known as "Bird" or "Yardbird," was a revolutionary American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer who left an indelible mark on the music world despite his short life. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1920, Parker was a virtuoso alto saxophonist and a pivotal figure in the development of bebop, a complex and fast-paced style of jazz that pushed the boundaries of harmony and rhythm. His innovative approach to improvisation, characterized by rapid passing chords, altered chords, and intricate melodies, continues to influence jazz musicians today. Parker's legacy endures not just through his recordings, but also through the countless artists who have been inspired by his groundbreaking work, making him one of the most significant and imitated improvisers in jazz history. His music transcends time, offering a timeless journey into the heart of jazz.
