Product description

Bill Keith and Jim Collier's 1978 album, "Bill Keith and Jim Collier," is a hidden gem that transcends borders and genres. Recorded in France and later released on CD in Canada, this album is a testament to the unique collaboration between banjo virtuoso Bill Keith and guitarist Jim Collier. Spanning just 27 minutes, the album is a concise yet powerful exploration of bluegrass and newgrass music, featuring 11 tracks that showcase the artists' mastery and innovation within the genre.

The album opens with "Smoke Smoke Smoke," setting the pace for a journey through a variety of styles and tempos. From the intricate melodies of "Bourrée No. 2" to the lively "Texas Cowboy," and the waltzing "Crab Waltz," each track offers a distinct flavor, demonstrating the duo's versatility and technical prowess. The album also includes a cover of the classic "Eight of January - The Twelfth of Never," adding a touch of familiarity to the collection.

Not widely known in the United States, this album is a treasure for those seeking authentic and less mainstream bluegrass and newgrass music. The interplay between Keith's banjo and Collier's guitar is a highlight, creating a dynamic and engaging soundscape that is both traditional and innovative. Whether you're a longtime fan of the genre or a newcomer looking to explore, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Bill Keith

Bill Keith, born William Bradford Keith on December 20, 1939, in Boston, Massachusetts, was a pioneering five-string banjoist whose innovative playing style left an indelible mark on bluegrass and newgrass music. With a career spanning over four decades, Keith's influence on the banjo is often compared to that of the genre's founder, Bill Monroe. His unique picking style, informally named after him, pushed the boundaries of the instrument and inspired countless musicians. Keith's collaborations with notable artists like Bill Monroe, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Ian and Sylvia, and Judy Collins further cemented his legacy. Until his passing on October 23, 2015, Keith remained a beloved figure in the music world, continually evolving and inspiring generations of banjo players.
