Product description

Big Brother & The Holding Company's self-titled debut album, released in January 1967, is a seminal work in the psychedelic rock genre, capturing the raw energy and innovative spirit of the San Francisco music scene. This 28-minute journey features the powerful vocals of Janis Joplin, who would later become a legendary figure in rock music. The album includes iconic tracks like "Bye, Bye Baby," "Intruder," and "Light Is Faster Than Sound," showcasing the band's unique blend of acid rock and psychedelic influences. Originally released as a short-duration 10-track venture on Mainstream Records in August 1967, this album was later reissued with additional tracks. By the time of its release, Big Brother & The Holding Company had already made a significant impact, notably with their performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which solidified Janis Joplin's status as a captivating live performer. This album is a testament to the band's groundbreaking sound and their enduring influence on rock music.

This 2018 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Psychedelic Folk-Rock Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    AjsRezzsNovember 30, 2025United States🇺🇸

Incredibly far-out late '60s psychedelic folk-rock featuring an amazingly trippy stereo sound. On certain tracks, it seems like Janis' voice is layered three times, which really works wonders. Janis & The Band absolutely nail it! The sound quality is top-notch with a solid bass line.

  • Big Brother's Hidden Gem

    3 out of 5 stars
    Xikajyn-UjoqyssacaAugust 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

Fans and collectors alike often overlook the debut LP from Big Brother & The Holding Company, yet it holds some significant attractions. Chief among these is the extraordinary, trippy acid voyage "All Is Loneliness," a track that alone justifies giving this record a spin, surpassing much else in the catalog. Powell St. John, who later collaborated with the 13th Floor Elevators and Mother Earth, penned the smash "Bye, Bye Baby," creating a fascinating link. Janis Joplin's vocals embody that coveted blues wail, a quality later echoed by artists like Robert Plant—and when it's executed just right, it truly shines. Initially dropped as a concise 10-track effort on Mainstream records around August 1967, available in both mono and stereo, these first pressings are notorious for their noise. Following the success of "Bye, Bye Baby," Columbia secured the rights and re-released the album beginning in the '70s, expanding it to 12 tracks by appending a non-LP single to the end of each side. The album has seen multiple CD reissues, including a 1999 remix by Vic Anesini. The remix is excellent, so faithfully replicating the original mix that it went unnoticed as a remix for over two decades; for the audiophile purists, this might be the "best" version. Meanwhile, the 2016 high-res remaster offers impressive fidelity with ample headroom, and seems to closely replicate the original Mainstream vinyl if the left channel is boosted by roughly 3db.

  • Abbey Road's Impressive Stereo Pressing

    3 out of 5 stars

The first US pressing from Abbey Road is incredibly quiet, with outstanding stereo separation. There's no hiss or noise between songs or within them. I bought a VG+ looking LP that plays like NM throughout. I'm genuinely impressed by the top-notch vinyl and the stereo mix. This isn't some fake stereo recording, it's the real deal.
