About Stephen Layton

Stephen Layton is a renowned English conductor celebrated for his profound impact on choral music over the past three decades. Born in Derby to a church organist father, Layton's early musical training began as a chorister at Winchester Cathedral. His academic journey took him to Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, where he served as an organ scholar under the esteemed Stephen Cleobury.

Layton's career is marked by his groundbreaking approach to choral music, earning him the title of one of the finest exponents in the world today. He is the founder of the acclaimed choirs Polyphony and the Holst Singers, both of which have garnered international praise for their performances and recordings. His repertoire spans a wide range of choral works, and he is known for his championing of new music.

In addition to his choral work, Layton has cultivated a strong career in orchestral conducting, collaborating with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. His contributions to classical music were recognized in 2020 when he was awarded an MBE for his services to the field.
