Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, historical sounds of Franz Berwald's "The Battle of Leipzig," a captivating orchestral journey released on January 1, 2002, by Sterling Records. This album spans a full hour and fifteen minutes, offering a comprehensive exploration of Berwald's unique musical genius.

The album opens with the powerful "Slaget vid Leipzig," a dramatic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the collection. Berwald's Concerto for 2 Violins and Orchestra in A Major follows, showcasing his mastery of classical form with its three distinct movements: I. Adagio. Rondo, Allegro, II. Tempo di Marcia, and III. Allegro.

The album then delves into the operatic world with selections from "Drottningen av Golconda," including the Ouverture, Marcia, Brollopstag, Baletto, and Folk-Dans. These pieces offer a glimpse into Berwald's theatrical side, highlighting his ability to craft memorable melodies and engaging rhythms.

The "Thema mit Variationen fur Violine und Orchester" is another standout, featuring six variations that demonstrate Berwald's skill in developing a theme and exploring its possibilities. The album concludes with selections from "Estrella de Soria," including the Ouverture and Polonas, providing a fitting finale to this musical journey.

Franz Berwald, often overshadowed by his contemporaries, shines brightly on this album. "The Battle of Leipzig" is a testament to his enduring legacy, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience for classical music enthusiasts.

About Franz Berwald

Franz Adolf Berwald, born in Stockholm on July 23, 1796, was a pioneering Swedish Romantic composer and violinist, often hailed as the most significant Swedish composer of the 19th century. Despite his initial struggles for recognition, Berwald's compositions, which include operas, chamber music, and four symphonies, have since been celebrated for their innovative spirit and emotional depth. His work is considered a precursor to the Scandinavian symphonic school, blending lyrical melodies with structural sophistication. Berwald's Violin Concerto, for instance, showcases his Schubertian influences with its evocative andante opening. Beyond music, Berwald led an unconventional life, working as an orthopedist and later managing a sawmill and glass factory. His legacy endures as a testament to his enduring creativity and resilience, with his compositions continuing to captivate audiences and inspire musicians worldwide.
