Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, resonant world of viola music with William Primrose's captivating album, "Berlioz: Harold in Italy - Walton: Viola Concerto." This exquisite collection, released on June 1, 2005, under the prestigious Naxos label, is a testament to Primrose's mastery of the chamber music and classical genres.

The album is a harmonious blend of two remarkable works: Hector Berlioz's "Harold in Italy" and William Walton's "Viola Concerto." Primrose's interpretation of Berlioz's symphony, inspired by Byron's "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," is a journey through the picturesque landscapes of Italy, evoking scenes of melancholy, joy, and adventure. The four movements, from the introspective "Harold in the Mountains" to the thrilling "Orgy of the Brigands," showcase Primrose's exceptional range and expressive depth.

The album also features Walton's "Viola Concerto," a piece that Primrose himself premiered in 1929. The concerto's three movements, from the serene "Andante comodo" to the lively "Allegro moderato," highlight Primrose's technical prowess and musical sensitivity. His performance of the Walton concerto is a rare treat, offering a glimpse into the work of a composer who was deeply influenced by the viola's unique timbre.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 19 minutes, this album is a substantial exploration of the viola's capabilities, offering both seasoned classical enthusiasts and newcomers a rich and rewarding listening experience. Primrose's playing is nuanced and powerful, bringing a fresh perspective to these timeless works. Whether you're drawn to the dramatic narratives of Berlioz or the lyrical elegance of Walton, this album is a celebration of the viola and a testament to William Primrose's enduring legacy.
