Product description

"Voci," released in February 2002 on the prestigious ECM New Series label, is a captivating exploration of contemporary chamber music, featuring the extraordinary talents of violist Kim Kashkashian. This album, a collaboration with the late composer Luciano Berio, presents a unique blend of classical and folk influences, showcasing Berio's innovative approach to composition and Kashkashian's virtuosic playing.

The album is a deep dive into Berio's "Folk Songs II," a collection of Sicilian folk melodies reimagined through a contemporary lens. Kashkashian's performance is nothing short of breathtaking, her viola weaving intricate patterns that bring these ancient songs to life in a new, modern context. The album also includes "Naturale," a suite based on Sicilian folk music, further emphasizing the fusion of traditional and contemporary elements.

"Voci" is not just an album of beautiful music; it's a testament to the power of collaboration and the endless possibilities of musical interpretation. Kim Kashkashian's performance is a masterclass in viola playing, her technical prowess and expressive depth shining through in every note. The album's duration of just over an hour makes it a perfect choice for both casual listening and in-depth study, offering a rich and rewarding experience with each listen.

The recording, featuring the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, is a reference-quality production, capturing the full range and nuance of Kashkashian's performance. The album's release on ECM New Series, known for its high production values and commitment to artistic integrity, is a testament to the quality of the music within.

Whether you're a fan of contemporary classical music, a lover of folk music, or simply appreciate exceptional musicianship, "Voci" is an album that demands your attention. It's a stunning showcase of Kim Kashkashian's artistry and a fitting tribute to Luciano Berio's enduring legacy."
