Product description

Dive into the world of classical virtuosity with Ivry Gitlis' captivating album, featuring two masterpieces of the 20th-century repertoire. Recorded in 1961, this mono version album showcases Gitlis' extraordinary talent and deep understanding of the music, making it a timeless addition to any classical collection.

The album opens with Alban Berg's hauntingly beautiful "Concerto 'À la mémoire d'un ange'" for violin and orchestra. This profound work, dedicated to the memory of Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler and Walter Gropius, is a poignant exploration of grief and loss. Gitlis' performance is nothing short of breathtaking, with his expressive playing bringing out the concerto's intricate details and profound depths.

Following Berg's concerto is Arnold Schoenberg's "La nuit transfigurée," a richly evocative work based on a poem by Richard Dehmel. Originally composed for string sextet, this orchestral arrangement highlights the piece's lush harmonies and dramatic contrasts. Gitlis' interpretation is both sensitive and powerful, capturing the work's intense passion and longing.

Throughout the album, Gitlis is accompanied by the Pro Musica Orchester Wien, conducted by William Strickland. Their collaboration results in a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply moving, offering a unique perspective on these iconic works. With a total duration of 52 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the works of Berg and Schoenberg, as well as a testament to Ivry Gitlis' enduring legacy as one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century.
