This is an outstanding session from one of the best in hard bop—captured in October 1957, featuring two incredible lineups: a quintet (with Art Farmer, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Charlie Persip) and a larger nonet including Gigi Gryce, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Cleveland, and Julius Watkins. Tracks like “Whisper Not,” “Step Lightly,” and “Capri” showcase amazing arrangements, soulful saxophone solos, and thrilling group dynamics. These 1984 Original Jazz Classics mono pressings are famous for their clarity and sound quality. This copy sounds fantastic—warm, sharp, and full of life. It keeps the album's lively yet melodic feel, with a deep tenor sound, crisp horn lines, and a rhythm section that swings with precision.
