Product description

Dive into the raw and unfiltered world of free jazz with Albert Ayler's "Bells & Prophecies," a captivating reissue of his 1965 live performances. This expanded edition, released on ESP Disk' in 2015, offers a double dose of Ayler's groundbreaking work, featuring both the original "Bells" and "Prophecy" albums. With a runtime of over an hour and 46 minutes, this collection is a testament to Ayler's innovative spirit and his pivotal role in the avant-garde jazz movement.

The album showcases Ayler's quintet, including the legendary Sunny Murray on drums, Gary Peacock on bass, and Donald Ayler on trumpet, delivering powerful live performances that are as intense as they are inspiring. Tracks like "Bells," "Spirits," and "Prophecy" highlight Ayler's distinctive saxophone playing and his ability to blend free jazz with elements of hard bop and avant-garde experimentation.

"Bells & Prophecies" is not just a collection of songs but a historical document capturing a pivotal moment in jazz history. The expanded edition includes a 20-page booklet with liner notes, magazine clippings, and an interview with Bernard Stollman, providing valuable context and insights into Ayler's music and the ESP-Disk story. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a thrilling journey through the mind of one of jazz's most visionary artists.

About Albert Ayler

Albert Ayler, a pioneering force in the free jazz movement of the 1960s, was an American avant-garde saxophonist and composer whose powerful and primal sound left an indelible mark on the jazz world. Born on July 13, 1936, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Ayler began playing the saxophone as a child and quickly developed a unique style that blended the raw emotion of free jazz with the structured intensity of hard bop. Once considered the heir apparent to John Coltrane, Ayler's music was characterized by its spiritual depth, innovative techniques, and a relentless pursuit of sonic exploration. His influential albums, such as "My Name Is Albert Ayler" and "Spiritual Unity," showcase his extraordinary talent and continue to inspire musicians and listeners alike. Ayler's tragic and mysterious death in 1970 at the age of 34 cut short a career that was as brilliant as it was brief, but his legacy endures as one of the most enigmatic and powerful voices in jazz history.
