Product description

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the French Baroque with Jean-Baptiste Lully's "Bellérophon," a resplendent opera that stands as a testament to the composer's mastery. Recorded live, this two-disc set captures the exhilarating energy and dramatic intensity of Lully's final opera to be revived in modern times. With a runtime of nearly two hours, this 1679 tragédie lyrique unfolds over five acts, accompanied by a prologue that sets the stage for the enchanting tale to come.

Under the baton of Christophe Rousset and the virtuosity of Les Talens Lyriques, "Bellérophon" is brought to life with exuberant spirit and musical polish. The opera tells the story of Bellérophon, a hero who finds himself in the kingdom of Lycia, where he becomes entangled in the political and romantic intrigues of the royal court. The narrative is brought to life through a rich tapestry of arias, choruses, and instrumental pieces that showcase Lully's innovative use of dance and spectacle.

This live recording, released by Aparté in 2011, is a rare opportunity to experience the opulence and theatricality of 17th-century French opera. The performance is marked by its rhythmic vitality and dramatic urgency, making it an essential addition to any Baroque music enthusiast's collection. With its stunning orchestration and captivating storytelling, "Bellérophon" is a celebration of Jean-Baptiste Lully's enduring genius and his pivotal role in the development of French opera.

About Jean-Baptiste Lully

Jean-Baptiste Lully, born in Florence in 1632, was a titan of French Baroque music, despite his Italian roots. His life's work was deeply intertwined with the opulent court of Louis XIV, where he served as a composer, dancer, and instrumentalist. Lully's influence was so profound that he effectively controlled French court music from 1662 onwards, and his style resonated throughout Europe. He is renowned for his operas and his collaborations with the playwright Molière on numerous comédie-ballets, including the iconic "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme."

Lully's contributions to music are vast, with over 40 ballets and a significant body of sacred music to his name. He is credited with founding the French opera genre, creating a unique style of musical declamation that perfectly suited the French language. His tragic death in 1687, resulting from an infection caused by a conducting stick, only adds to the dramatic narrative of his life. Lully's legacy endures, making him a pivotal figure in the history of European music.
