Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with David Oistrakh's "Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms & Tchaikovsky: Violin Concertos." This remarkable collection, released on September 1, 2015, under the Andromeda label, showcases the virtuosity of one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century. Spanning a generous 2 hours and 18 minutes, this album is a testament to Oistrakh's mastery and the enduring brilliance of these four composers.

The album features a stunning selection of violin concertos, each a masterpiece in its own right. From Beethoven's iconic Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, to Mendelssohn's deeply expressive Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, Brahms' profound Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77, and Tchaikovsky's exuberant Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, each piece is performed with unparalleled skill and emotional depth. Oistrakh's collaboration with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Aleksander Gauk, and the USSR National Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Kirill Kondrashin, adds a layer of richness and authenticity to these performances.

This remastered edition brings new life to these historic recordings, allowing both seasoned classical music enthusiasts and newcomers to appreciate the intricate details and nuances of Oistrakh's playing. Whether you're drawn to the dramatic intensity of Beethoven, the lyrical beauty of Mendelssohn, the structural brilliance of Brahms, or the romantic fervor of Tchaikovsky, this album offers a comprehensive journey through some of the most significant works in the violin concerto repertoire.

About David Oistrakh

David Oistrakh, a titan of 20th-century classical music, was a Soviet Russian violinist, violist, and conductor whose name is synonymous with virtuosity and artistry. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1908, Oistrakh began his violin studies at a tender age and quickly rose to prominence, earning the nickname "the Eastern Paganini." His exceptional technique and rich tone production made him one of the most-recorded violinists of all time, with a repertoire that spanned concerti, sonatas, and Soviet masterworks.

Oistrakh's career was marked by numerous premieres of works by renowned composers such as Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Khachaturian. He was not just a performer but also a dedicated pedagogue, sharing his knowledge as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. His influence extended beyond his performances, as he mentored countless students and inspired generations of musicians.

Despite the political climate of his time, Oistrakh's musical genius transcended borders, earning him international acclaim. He performed extensively in the Soviet Union and abroad, leaving an indelible mark on the world of classical music. His legacy continues to inspire, with his recordings and performances celebrated for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. Oistrakh's contributions to music were recognized with numerous awards, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR and the Lenin Prize.
