Product description

György Cziffra, a name synonymous with virtuosity and passion in the world of classical piano, presents a captivating album that masterfully blends the works of three titans of classical music: Beethoven, Schumann, and Liszt. Released in 2007 under the Urania label, this album is a testament to Cziffra's extraordinary skill and his deep understanding of these composers' intricate and evocative works.

The album opens with Beethoven's "Polonaise in C Major, Op. 89," a piece that showcases Cziffra's technical prowess and his ability to bring out the grandeur and elegance of Beethoven's compositions. Following this, the "32 Variations in C Minor, WoO 80" demonstrates Cziffra's capacity to navigate complex variations with precision and artistry.

The heart of the album is dedicated to Schumann's "Carnaval, Op. 9," a suite of character pieces that Cziffra interprets with a remarkable range of emotions and nuances. Each movement, from the playful "Pierrot" to the tender "Chiarina," is rendered with a sensitivity that brings Schumann's vivid characters to life.

The album concludes with Liszt's "Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major," a work that demands both technical brilliance and profound musicality. Cziffra's performance is nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing his ability to command the full dynamic range of the piano and his deep connection to Liszt's romantic and dramatic style.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 8 minutes, this album is a comprehensive journey through some of the most beloved and challenging works in the classical piano repertoire. György Cziffra's masterful interpretations make this album a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast, offering a rich and rewarding experience that highlights the artist's extraordinary talent and the enduring power of these timeless compositions.

About György Cziffra

György Cziffra, born in Budapest in 1921, was a Hungarian-French pianist renowned for his extraordinary virtuosity and unique interpretations. A protégé of Ernő Dohnányi, who studied under Liszt's favourite pupil, Cziffra's career spanned the postwar decades, leaving an indelible mark on the European classical music scene. His performances were nothing short of electrifying, often leaving critics awestruck and bewildered by his rapacious technique and profound musicality. Cziffra's repertoire was vast, but he was particularly celebrated for his renditions of Liszt and Chopin. His recordings, such as the complete works of Liszt on EMI France, offer a testament to his artistry and remain essential listening for classical piano enthusiasts. Cziffra passed away in 1994, but his legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century endures.
